Alfredo
Franco
contemporary classical guitar

Born in Turin in 1967, Alfredo Franco’s path to composition was non-linear. Before dedicating himself to the classical guitar and eventual formal study, he immersed himself in various non-classical musical contexts. This early eclecticism was later refined by rigorous academic training at the University of Turin (DAMS), where he focused on the historical and critical aspects of music.
A pivotal moment in Franco’s career was his decision to abandon concert performance to focus entirely on composition. This shift allowed him to channel his deep understanding of the guitar into a prolific body of work that has gained international prestige:
-
Global Recognition: His works have been performed at venues like Carnegie Hall, Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory, Shizuoka Concert Hall, Brescia chitarra Festival, Festival Corde d'autunno, etc.)
-
Elite Collaborations: His music is brought to life by acclaimed interpreters such as Cristiano Porqueddu, Alberto Mesirca, Kanahi Yamashita, Cordas et bentu duo, among many others.
Franco’s music is a bridge between the analytical rigor of his academic background and a raw, expressive lyricism.
-
The "Historical" Voice: His DAMS education is evident in his dialogue with the past. He treats structures not as museum pieces, but as living frameworks for modern exploration.
-
Guitar Mastery: Having been a guitarist himself, his writing for the instrument is exceptionally nuanced, exploiting "timbral research" to create pictorial, atmospheric soundscapes.
-
Intellectual Depth: His transition from youth "non-classical" experiences to formal composition has resulted in a style that is "restless" yet "meditative"—often drawing from literature and philosophy to explore the human condition.
